Knight, Wakefield Awarded Life Membership

Steve Wakefield (left) and Paul Knight (right) reminisce on the past few years of progress at the club after receiving their Life Member ties.

Former Club President and current President Steve Wakefield were both awarded Life Memberships at this week’s Annual General Meeting.

Knight, a former president of nearly 10 years, started as a player after moving to New Zealand from Australia. Knight represented the Premier Men’s side as a top order batter and was part of the national championship winning side of 2013. Knight also played for the Scrapheap and in recent years, our Gators side. Knight also spent time as Men’s club coach, Scrapheap coach, Gators coach, and most recently, as the coach of the Premier Women’s side, leading them to 2x T20 titles, 2x Kirsty Bond Titles, and 1 One Day title in the last 4 years.

Knight stepped up as president and helped instil a culture of hard work and celebrating success with enthusiasm. He also started the process of the club’s redevelopment project – build new nets, a new pavilion and move the blocks at Elmwood Park.

Steve has been around the club for over 20 years, with his sons initially playing cricket here as juniors before representing the senior men’s club. Steve sat on the club’s junior committee when his sons were coming through the grades and stepped up to help our redevelopment project a little over two years ago. Steve’s efforts have been tireless, spearheading the fundraising efforts, sitting through countless council meetings, liaising with architects and builders, and spending much of his own time in the pavilion decorating the interior, staining the deck, stocking the bar, and generally taking the lead on the 1%’rs that make our pavilion such an asset for the club.
